What a shower remodel costs, and why the glass can outprice it
By The RenoPeek desk, Cost research and tools · updated
A shower remodel averages $7,000 nationally, with most jobs between $2,000 and $9,000. The number that surprises people is the enclosure: frameless glass runs $1,000 to $3,300 installed, which is more than a fiberglass shower unit can cost at the bottom of its own range.
The number
HomeAdvisor puts the national average shower remodel at $7,000, with most jobs between $2,000 and $9,000 and a full range of $300 to $15,000, read September 16, 2026.
For scale: the same source puts a whole bathroom remodel at $12,146 on average. A shower on its own is more than half of that figure, which is why it is worth pricing separately rather than treating as one line of a bathroom job — the breakdown for the full room is in what a bathroom remodel costs.
Cost by component
| Component | Installed cost |
|---|---|
| Fiberglass shower | $400–$5,000 |
| Acrylic shower | $500–$2,500 |
| Cultured marble | $700–$2,450 |
| New shower unit, all types | $600–$12,000 |
| Framed enclosure | $350–$830 |
| Semi-frameless enclosure | $820–$2,000 |
| Frameless enclosure | $1,000–$3,300 |
| Shower door | $600–$1,350 |
| Tile | $0.50–$50 per sq ft |
Material names predict less than people expect. Fiberglass runs from $400 to $5,000 — a twelve-fold spread on its own — so “a fiberglass shower” can describe almost any budget. The tile line is wider still at $0.50 to $50 per square foot, which is why a tiled shower is quoted from the tile choice outward.
The glass can cost more than the shower
This is the finding worth carrying into a quote.
A frameless enclosure runs $1,000 to $3,300 installed. A fiberglass shower starts at $400, acrylic at $500. At the lower end of the market, the glass around the shower costs more than the shower inside it.
Frameless glass and a framed door keep water in equally well. The difference of up to $2,500 buys a look, and it is the one line you can cut without touching the shower.
That makes the enclosure the most negotiable line in the job. A framed enclosure at $350 to $830 does the same work, and semi-frameless at $820 to $2,000 splits the difference. If the budget has to come down, this is where it comes down first — before the pan, the waterproofing or the valve, all of which decide whether the shower still works in ten years.
Tub-to-shower and walk-in conversions
HomeAdvisor puts both a tub-to-shower conversion and a walk-in shower at $1,500 to $8,000. The range is wide for the same reason: what goes in the space.
At the bottom, a prefabricated base and surround drop into the footprint the tub occupied, the drain stays roughly where it was, and the job is mostly removal and fitting. At the top, the tub comes out, the floor is opened, the drain moves to suit a curbless walk-in, and the walls are tiled floor to ceiling. That is a construction job, and it is priced like one.
The costs nobody quotes up front
Showers fail slowly and out of sight. Water gets past grout and failed caulk, runs down inside the wall cavity, and does its damage for years before a tile lifts.
That is why HomeAdvisor lists water damage repair at $1,000 to $3,000 and mold removal at $500 or more as shower-specific extras. Neither can be priced before the old surround comes off, and both are common enough that a contingency line is not pessimism — it is arithmetic. Hold 15 to 20 percent back.
Labor is the other line that moves. Tile installers bill $30 to $120 an hour and plumbers $45 to $200. A tiled shower involves both trades, working in sequence in a small space, which is part of why a bathroom carries the highest labor share of any room.
Where to spend and where not to
Spend on the pan and the waterproofing. They are invisible when finished and they decide whether the shower is still dry in ten years; nothing visible compensates for getting them wrong.
Spend on the valve. It is used thousands of times, it sits inside the wall where replacing it later means opening the tile, and a cheap one is noticeable from the first week.
Do not spend on frameless glass if the budget is tight. It is the largest discretionary line and the easiest to scale back. Do not tile the whole shower in a premium tile when a single feature wall reads the same — the tile calculator will show how fast the area multiplies a per-foot price, and what tile installation costs explains why labor, not the tile, dominates that bill.
When not to remodel the shower
When it is sound and only dated. Regrouting, recaulking, a new valve trim and a new door change how a shower looks for a small fraction of $7,000, and none of them risks what is behind the wall.
When the real problem is the whole bathroom. If the vanity, the floor and the ventilation also need work, pricing the shower alone understates the job — start from the remodel cost calculator and the full bathroom breakdown instead.
When you are choosing tile or glass from a render. AI tools show enclosures and tile convincingly and know nothing about drain position or wall condition, a gap covered in AI bathroom design apps. Use the image for the look, and the numbers on this page for the decision.
